Ethan's Mega Update

Since I haven't posted on here in forever. Here's a little update.

Right now it is Monday morning, 7:20 am.

I haven't seen sleep since I woke up Friday morning.

I've basically locked myself in my room for the past 3 days with nothing but my cintiq and

energy drinks (I'm such a hypocrite, making these animations and then drinking these

things), besides the occasional leaving the house to breathe/ eat.

You may ask, "Ethan, my dear and near friend. Why so diligent in working all of a sudden?"

And with that I will answer, As you may know up to this point I have had at least 3 or 4

ideas for this project leading up to where I was last you saw me.

And unfortunately (not really) I am in no way proud of the product I currently had.

So quickly going through character sketches and ideas earlier in the semester

I am revisiting one that I had started animating but left behind.

In this short geared towards a teenage/ college audience, two characters are

compared side by side, one in a positive light that is backed up by healthy life choices, while

the other is seen as negative and has poor health habits.

Nearing my 72nd hour of active working these are a few screen shots to prove I actually am

pushing forward (God forbid I work at home) from the monstrosity I was working with

before. At this point I would say I am about 80% done, needing only as few basic

background assets and character animations.

This is the character design for Shaun (good example). I am very satisfied with how crisp the

style looks as opposed to the previous.

This is the character design for Chad (bad example). He is full of bad attitude and shows that just

because you're not fat doesn't mean you're in shape.

This is a shot of Chad partying and making poor life choices. It's still missing a background, but

was cool to edit in AE.

Woah! Look at all those layers and assets you have to work with there, Ethan!

You must be a really cool guy when it comes to making things in After Effects!

I can't believe you've never used it before!

False.

That about sums it up.

Sugar & Kids Again

Sugar-Sweetened Beverages

.child about to eat a large spponful of sugar
Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) are drinks with added sugar including: non-diet soft drinks/sodas, flavored juice drinks, sports drinks, sweetened tea, coffee drinks, energy drinks, and electrolyte replacement drinks.  The calories in sugar sweetened beverages can contribute to weight gain and provide little to no nutritional value. Sugar-sweetened beverages do not fill you up the same way that food does. Those extra calories can lead to other health risks including obesity, tooth decay, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

What you should know

  • Approximately 11% of the calories youth consume come from sugar-sweetened beverages. (more)
  • Each 12-ounce soft drink per day consumed by children increases their odds of becoming obese by 60%. (more)
  • Among young children, aged 1 through 5 years, consumption of sweetened, carbonated soft drinks was associated with an 80-100% increased risk of dental caries. (more

Assets

Just figured I'd post up what I had. All of the character parts are movable and changeable, the backgrounds are all in movable pieces so that I can manipulate parallax and subtle camera shifts.

Not sure if I'm still utilizing a shift from desaturated at the beginning to bright at the end, but that will be easy to apply afterward in AE.

Honeybees and not-really-snow-white Turtledoves.

Figuring I won't need anything from the opposite angles, but that I could just mirror these in a pinch.

I commented on all visual work that was on the blog.
Much of this was covered in class, but here are the comments anyway.
You can learn by reading the comments on other students' blogs too.
Did not comment on research or story, since we have discussed these so much in class.

Intensity Chart

Saturday, October 6, 2012

Next week's work: end of basic design

SB 2:  Recently you made SB2: the cinamatic version of your storyboard.  You considered framing, motion of camera, motion of characters, transitions, cutting, etc.   You used the Transformation Tools in  the Composition Timeline of anchor point, position, scale, rotation, and opacity to pan, dolly, make close-ups and distant establishing shots, etc.  You ran through animation again and again for timing.  You added music.  We had crits of 7 of these; 3 more next Tuesday.

You based SB 2 on the Making Comics PowerPoint lecture, and on careful analysis of camera in Sleddin' by John Pettingill on Vimeo:  vimeo.com/4229747   You are continuing to refine your SB 2 after crit!

DUE TUESDAY:
BRING INTENSITY CHART AND COLOR SCRIPT TO CLASS. BRING LINE ART BLACK AND WHITE CONCEPT ART DRAWING & Reference Images TO CLASS .  Do thumbnail sketches first to consider alternative construction and views.

1)  Art Direction:  Intensity Chart and Color Script (Done before or after concept art.)   You can do this simply, but must carefully consider colors you want to use and include those at bottom of intensity chart. (You can also include colors as reference dots on PS shots if you like - you will later.)

2)  Concept Art: Design of Major Environment(s) (Establishing Shot(s)) in Photoshop
*You must gather reference images.

*Please study the following blog as a reference:  sleddin.blogspot.com
Note particularly (in list on right in BLOG ARCHIVE):
   Lighting Paintovers
   FX paintovers
Concept for set-dressing of final shot

Episode 56 - MMORPG Landscapes

Do Concept Art as black and white drawing on paper first.
In class we will bring black and white drawing into Photoshop.  Finish painting in PS in color/value.
(Can be wider and taller than movie frame so you can pan or look up.)
Post to blog as flattened version when finished or as WIP (work in progress) as you go along.
(Keep original version in layers in PS so easier to animate later.)
Add detail, textures, light now if you have time, or wait until you start animation following week.
All work Due (including earlier work):  Midnight, Thursday Oct 11, MCS office: burn to disc.

Matthew Garrett, Character Design Cont.

As I continue to develop my storyboard in after effects I have been finalizing my character designs.  The water bottle on the left is starting to get the shape I want.  I think I will use the name 'TAP' with the same bottle design above.  I am not very sure about the eye placement for the watter bottle (the main character). I am very pleased with the Coca-Cola bottle and will continue to develop his appearance.

Week 2- Character Hansel Kelly Richard

Ethan Gallardo, Story, Week 2

MONSTER ENERGY! DONT FEEL THE CRASH.

This is an advertisement promoting water and demoting artificial energy drinks.
Two boys named, Little Poet & Jonny Fuego are placed in a competition where one is allowed to drink an energy drink and the other is allowed to hydrate properly by drinking our best friend, water.
Little Poet would drink the energy drink and starts out at a rapid pace (with steam blowing out of his ears, his face about to burst, and even his skin is changing colors) and wins the first event, jumping rope. As round two starts Jonny Fuego, who drank water, goes at a steady pace while the other begins to feel the effects of a crash from the sugar high and loses the 2nd round.
Little Poet is completely useless from by the time the final round starts and is asleep or something of the sort.
The ad will end with a setup glorifying water as a part of all our diets, recommending 8 glasses a day. The Slogan of the ad will be "Don't feel the crash!"

Exposition: A child is sitting in a park looking glum, an cartoon character approaches him
Conflict: The child feels bad for being picked on and being insecure about his appearance
Climax: Together they confront their enemy, The Sugar-Bully, who is affecting the playground.
Resolution: The Sugar-Bully is defeated and the child loses weight and becomes happy.

Sally Franckowiak - Test Animation

Not sure why the lines look so funky here. Probably because it's so shrunken down. Anyways, it was a "test" so I tested making a 3 second animation in photoshop. And then just turned it into a gif to post here.  Those are candies she's throwing into her mouth.

Maggie Trigg - Adjusted Character Design

Since I'm pretty sure I'm working with my little sister as a character now, I figured I'd adjust accordingly. I think the design is simple enough to make After Effects animating feasible, too.

Just one angle:

Playing with the idea of technicolor monochromatic children as crowd though. Just to keep down on the details (easier to work with fewer colors) and up on the cheerfulness (hooray, colors).

THOUGHTS? :0

Scedule until start of animation

Needed before the start of  animation:

* Research

*  Story

*  Character Design

*  Storyboard 1:   Narrative: text becomes consecutive images

*  Test Animation: Apply After Effects to facial animation or 2.5D; 3-5 sec

*  Storyboard 2:  Cinematography

*  Art Direction:  Intensity Chart and Color Script (Done before or after concept art.)

*  Concept Art: Design of Major Environment(s) Establishing Shot(s) in Photoshop

Follow schedule posted in studio.
Post work to blog.
These are critiqued along the way, and graded as a group before animation begins.
Due:  Midnight, Thursday Oct 11, MCS office: burn to disc

Josh Seal, Character Design, Week 3

Here are my character designs for the tortoise and the hare! These are just basic character designs to get the shape and stuff down. I envisioned the rabbit being a bully, with a bandana or something trying to show off his toughness. The turtle I plan on making a nerdy active guy by giving him some goggles (I would give him glasses but turtles don't have normal ears so there's no where they can go!) and maybe a cool watch or something. They're both supposed to be in elementary school, so they'll have some kind of school supplies as well.

Maggie Trigg, Story, Week 2 (Well, Storyboard)

Working off of/parodying that video (the first 30 seconds).

I only really needed to rewrite the line about Coke to be about water...

Here are my storyboard-things (just a quick pass over the shots in the video + what I'm changing) in GIF form. I will be redesigning the people to not be... real people...

Thoughts on whether they ought to be children/animals/whatever?

Ethan Gallardo, Character Design, Week 3

This is not a final representation, I might still play around with certain aspects of the character such as layering, color and various stylization. I need to start thinking of a way to make this character easy to integrate with a live actor on a live environment.

Matthew Garrett, Character Design, Week 3

Maggie Trigg, Character Design, Week 3

Just a rough idea for a cute vegetable-paletted character.

Going to work out a story; it would be cool to adapt something like this to Josh's tortoise and hare? But probably make the hare less... visually kind.
